Why don’t we have advent calendars for birthdays?
It’s the kind of question only a teenager would ask out loud. She loved the countdown to Christmas, a door a day with a little something behind each one, and couldn’t see why birthdays didn’t get the same. So she made one. Seven doors for her little sister, one small gift to open each morning in the run-up to the big day.
Her sister opened the first door and shouted “Yay!”, then did it again the next morning, and the next. Somewhere around door four, the family realised what was really happening. It wasn’t about the gifts. It was seven mornings of her sister feeling properly thought about, instead of one. They looked at that and thought: more of that, for everyone.

How we got here
The start
One teenager, one question, one box made for her sister. The first “Yay!” was entirely unprompted.
Word got round
Friends and family wanted their own. Then friends of friends. It turns out everyone knows someone whose birthday deserves more than a single morning, and they were happy to say so in the reviews.
Growing
The countdown became a proper little company, with a warehouse in Liverpool and thousands of boxes going out to people who’d never met the family who started it.
Today
Still packed by hand in Liverpool, and now part of the Advent Gift Company. Same seven doors. A lot more people opening them.

It started as one family’s idea and it’s grown up since, but the bit that matters hasn’t changed: someone here holds your box, checks it and closes the last door before it goes out.
